Occupy Wall Street Lyrics

Third Eye Blind- If There Ever Was A Time

If there ever was a time, it would be now
Is all I'm sayin'
If there ever was a time, to get on your feet
Take it to the street
Cause your the one that's getting played right now
By the game they're playing
Come on meet me down at Zuccotti Park
And say,

Oh where are the youth we need you now
Come speak the truth come break it down
Where are the youth we need you now

If there ever was a time, it would be now
To make the masters hear this
If there ever was a time to get downtown
And get non violent and fearless
Things only get brighter, when you light a spark
Everywhere you go right now is Zuccotti Park

And news corps says you don't have a plan
Well sit down man, I'll tell you again
The plans that stand together up to greed
And a tear gas can in a veteran's face
Won't change the case

Oh where are the youth we need you now
Come speak the truth come break it down
Where are the youth we need you now

If there ever was a time it would be now
For the rest of us
If there ever was a time it would be now
Because money and power incestuous
A moment makes a movement
Or it fades out in the dark
Come on, meet me down at Zuccotti Park

And I saw a sign in the Oakland Spring
It said: "Occupy everything"!
Or by and for and off won't mean a thing

Oh where are the youth we need you now
Come speak the truth come break it down
Where are the youth we need you now

If there ever was a time it would be now
Is all I'm saying
If there ever was a time to get on your feet
Take it to the street
Cause you're the one who's getting played right now
By the game they're playing
Come on meet me down at Zuccotti Park
Come on meet me down at Zuccotti Park
Come on meet me down at Zuccotti Park

Research Log #5

http://occupychico.com/

For the final research log I decided just to use a website used to promote the occupy movement in Chico, CA. The reason I am using this is to show that this movement is effecting everyone across the U.S. On the website you can find anything you want to know about the occupy movement and what you can do to help or join the movement. Going over it I saw that there were hundreds of events to attend or help out with just from the last couple of months. It has a calendar to show events and times and will keep you up to date on what is going on in the occupy movement.  It really showed me how organized this movement is. Since the movement started in New York and moved across the nation and globally I was surprised to see how organized and up to date everything was with the occupy movement. The website shows the different committees it has to help out the movement and just by having an account with the website and hitting join anyone can join any committee. The committees range from the rally committee that deals with when and where the rallies will be held, to the media committee that deals with press releases and general materials for distribution, to even a medical committee dedicated to the medical needs of anyone involved in the movement.  The events can even be split up into sub groups if you don't want to be fully committed to the movement with women occupy movements to occupy the crime scene. What I was the most surprised to see however was that they showed the meeting minutes from every meeting or rally the Occupy Chico Movement involved talking about what they have scheduled to talking about exactly what questions were asked and answered and by whom.  Every insight you could possibly need for the Occupy Chico Movement is involved in this website and it is kept up to date.

Research Log #4

Schmidt, Michael S. “Occupy seeks ways to regain attention; Visibility has waned, putting movement in need of fresh new tactics”. The International Herald Tribune(Washington) April 2, 2012. Web.

This article talks about how after 6 months since the start of the Occupy Movement, the movement has actually had a big impact on everybody, including politicians, and how the issues brought up by the movement will have to be addressed even in the upcoming presidential elections. The issues mainly deal with the inequalities of the 99% of the population and the greed and corruption of the top 1%. The protesters believe that the large corporations and banks are so greedy that it is costing the 99% money from the debt they have piled up for the economy.  It goes on to talk about how they believe the movement was starting to lose its fire but when the better weather comes the movement will regain its momentum.  Protesters said they were more dormant during the winter and that they were laying roots to boost the reemergence of the protest in spring.  From this they believe that the inequality issues will have to be addressed in the upcoming presidential elections and could have a big affect on the outcome of who is elected.

The part of this article that I had the biggest reaction from is when they talked about how they believe the movement will have an effect on the presidential elections. I was surprised that the movement had grown so big that they believe it will be part of the presidential platforms and not just from the democratic side, but now the Republican Party because the issue had grown so big. This made more sense when the article went on to talk about how the Occupy movement covered 6% of the news and had moved up to 14% by November. The only problems arose when even though 48% of the American population agreed with the occupy movements but only 29% of the voters agreed with how the protests were conducted.  The solution to this problem by the protesters is to change their protesting tactics. Some of the tactics brought up were to do things that have been tried in European protests including flash mobs and banner drops.

The reason I chose this article was because it was the most recent article I could find on the issue. It seems like for now it is the most relevant because it is so up to date on today’s issues. The article brings up points and issues that weren’t originally brought up or expected 6 months before when the movement started.  I don’t think most people thought that when the movement first started it would grow across the globe and become such a popular issue that it would be talked about in the next upcoming elections.

Unknown. “Occupy protest 6-month anniversary ends with police sweep” The Telegraph(U.K.) March 18, 2012. Web.

Six months after the start of the Occupy Movement started a huge group of protesters made their way back to Zuccotti Park in New York which is less than a 5 minute walk from the New York Stock Exchange. Many protesters gathered with their tents and sleeping bags and sat and locked arms in the park once the park was closed.  The night ended with the New York Police Department coming through and sweeping the park making many arrests as they came through.  A bus was seen driving away with about a dozen people in plastic handcuffs who were arrested during the police sweep. Earlier in the day the protesters were seen protesting just outside the New York Stock Exchange chanting phrases like “We are unstoppable” and “Spring is Coming”.  Many protesters also talked about how they were happy with where they were in the movement and what had been accomplished so far.

I feel like this article was the best one I had read so far about the Occupy Movement. One protester held a cardboard sign in the protests that read, “Spring is Coming”.  This short phrase gave me the biggest reaction from the entire article. It showed me that the mentality now is that the warm spring weather will revitalize the movement and have the same spark the movement once had a few months earlier.  Many people had talked in different articles saying that the movement was dying out and how it was going to fade out soon.  But this protest marking the 6th month anniversary showed that the movement was soon to get back on its feet and where it had left off once the spring weather comes. Protesters talked about how the movement will have the same momentum if not more than it had a few months earlier. The same protester said, “It's changed the language," she said. "It's brought out a lot of issues that people are talking about. ... And that's the start of change.” This shows me that they have succeeded in the first step of the movement which was just to get the word of the movement out to the public and this was succeeded when the movement moved all over the world and not just around the New York Stock Exchange.

I chose this source because the last source I had looked at was about 6 months ago and the very beginning of the movement and now this one was written less than a month ago. From this I was able to see what was going on with the movement and how far they had come along in the movement. I was interested to see that even though it seemed like the movement was starting to die out that they are very optimistic it will come back just as strong as when it had started once the weather gets better and also that they were happy with what the movement had accomplished so far.

Goodale, Gloria. "Occupy Wall Street: flash in the pan or beginning of a movement?; A growth spurt sent the Occupy Wall Street Movement sprawling across the US and into other countries.  It's showing greater orgainzation and widening appeal.  Will it hold together?" The Christian Science Monitor October 4, 2011. Web.

This article was written at the very start of the Occupy Movement.  It talks about how the movement was first starting to become a serious situation and how it wasn’t just a movement based around only Wall Street or even New York, but it had now grown to a global scale. The article also talks about the main groups of people that are starting to take place in this movement, saying that it tends to be people under the age of 30 and how they are using social networks from Facebook, to Twitter, and even e-mail. Why I chose this article was because it hits main points of what the movement is all about. It says that the movement is a leaderless movement of the 99% of Americans from all race, age, and gender that are being corrupted by greed and corruption of the top 1%. They are looking for a solution to the damage that has been done to the US Economy by the top 1%.

When I first read this article I was still pretty unfamiliar of what this occupy movement was all about. Now I see that they are just a group of people who are trying to make a difference through a nonviolent movement trying to achieve a solution for the debt that has come from what they believe is the greed and corruption from the top 1%.  “The movement was sparked by individuals targeting what they see as the excessive political pull of big banks and the financial sector in contributing to policies they feel are detrimental to the middle class” said a Villanova Professor. One protester described the Occupy movement as the “Movement of all movements”.  My reaction from this quote in the article written about 6 months ago was that I wondered if they would’ve known the growth of this movement throughout the globe and through many college campuses including our own Chico State.

The reason I chose this source was because it written right at the boom of the occupy movement. It had just traveled across the country and across the globe. I want to see what they have achieved in the last 6 months now and if they are anywhere close to where they want to be with the solution.  I am also interested in what has been done to help the movement besides all the nonviolent protests that I have seen personally at 3 different college campuses in California, including here at Chico State. I am excited to see what has come from the movement and the steps that have been taken to achieve their goal.

Beja, Mark. "Occupy protesters plan national rallies." Newsday(New York) February 29, 2012: pgA33. Web.

In the article "Occupy protesters plan national rallies" by Mark Beja, the author talks about how many groups around the country from Oakland, CA, to Las Vegas, NV, to Long Island, NY; will be coming out will be meeting to protest for the Occupy Wall Street movement. Some of the groups are receiving large donations in support of their campaign including Ben & Jerry two co-founders who will be donating  $1 million to the Movement Resources Group. The demonstrations are held to show support for the Occupy Wall Street movement and can be seen in just about every state across the nation.

My reaction to this was that I was surprised in the amount of work and people that are involved in this movement. This isn't just a small group of protesters that are rallying for something. Instead this is a nation wide protest that involves thousands of people from every state. What I also noticed is that this Movement is so big and captivating to people everywhere that I believe it is really starting to have an effect on the economy and the way major corporations are looking at things. They now have to take into consideration the effects this Occupy Wall Street movements is having on their businesses as well as all of the corporations as a whole.

The reason I chose this source was because I felt like it was a good opener to the research that I will be looking at. It's a good place to start from and it shows me the mass population of the movement and how widespread it is. From this piece I can now start to look at what other issues go into this movement and what else the movement is trying to achieve. I'm interested to know the very start of this movement; where it came from and what group of people were the originators of this movement. Or maybe this movement has been going on for a long time and people are now just starting to get the message across. Either way I would like to see where this movement originated from and what impact the movement has had on the economy so far. Also, I'm interested in what this movement will bring in the long run and if this movement can actually make a big impact since the size of the movement has grown so much.
